RU? On-On? WTF does all this mean??? You’ve come to the right place. In hashing, we have our own language. Here’s what some of our weird words and phrases mean.
Hasher = Any member of the group who participates in group activities.
Shiggy = Loose dirt/rocks, steep climbs, fences, cactus, water crossing, big rocks, uneven pavement
On-On = Shouted by hashers to indicate they are on true trail.
R U? = Shouted by hashers to indicate they have no idea where trail is.
Check = Trail mark indicating the trail could go in any direction.
Chalk Talk = Talk at beginning of trail by Hares, attempting to show the trail marks they think they will use if you can find/read them.
Beer Near = Mark and shout used to inform hashers that beer is in reasonable staggering distance.
Circle = Assembly of hashers at trail’s end, normally for the purpose of celebrating visitors, returning hashers, things that happened on trail and any other good reason to do down-downs.
Down-down = A means of punishing, rewarding, or merely recognizing an individual for any action or behavior according to the customs or whims of the group. The drinker is required to finish their beverage and prove it by holding the empty vessel upside down over their head.
Hash Names = The use of real names during an event is discouraged, and members are typically given a new “hash name,” usually in deference to a particularly notorious escapade, a personality trait, or anything else we think is funny and vaguely appropriate at the time. Virgins are referred to as “Just” with their first name until the group feels they have earned the right to a hash name.
Mismanagement = Hash unofficials – sometimes elected, sometimes appointed, sometimes strong-armed.
False Trail = Because strange locations, bad terrain, and unreadable/erased marks aren’t enough of a challenge, the hares can lay False Trail marks from checks that you can follow for a while but they don’t go anywhere and you have to go back and figure out where true trail really went.
DFL = “Dead F*cking Last” The slowest person on trail and the last to show up to circle.
FRB = “Front Running Bastard” R*cist bastard who runs ahead of the pack and is the first to arrive at circle.
Racist = One who treats the hash like a race and runs way too fast ahead of everyone.
Turkey/Eagle split = Many trails have a “Turkey Trail” which is a shorter trail for walkers and an “Eagle Trail” which is a longer trail for runners. Turkey/Eagle split means the two trails will have the same start/end points, but the Eagle trail will be a longer route.
A-A, A-B, or A-A’ = A to A means trail starts and ends in the same place, A to B means start and end are in different places, and A to A’ means the end point is a close walking distance from the start point.
